Applying to college requires a few key steps, even before you fill in the name and grades in the online portal:

Choosing where to apply! Did you know there are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the US? That's more than you could, and should, ever submit an application to.
Deciding what you want to major in. In high school, there are classes like biology and history, but in college, you could specialize in something like Genetics or try something new like Applied Linguistics! The major you choose will help to define your college experience and what opportunities, knowledge and connections you can rely on after you graduate.
Lots of writing. You've probably heard that there are a few essays to write, but applicants also need to describe the activities and awards they achieved, research specific details about the specific program they're applying to, brainstorm stories about key moments in their life, and more. This is on top of their usual writing assignments for school, too!
Self-reflection. Parents and teenagers alike have some thinking to do about what they want to see at the end of this exciting, but important, process.

What was it like reading applications for UC Berkeley, and what did you learn from the experience?
In ten weeks, I read over 1,000 international, incoming freshman applications to UC Berkeley. I got to know each applicant's profile and offer my insight as to whether I would recommend them to be offered a place as a UC Berkeley student. While I am no University of California expert, reading these applications has helped me to understand more about the behind-the-scenes thought process that goes into selecting each admitted student. I can't reveal my secrets, but trust that I have this process in mind with each transcript, essay, and activities list I read.

Probably not! While I may advise a less frequent meeting schedule for those not entering their senior year, and I will be transparent about the time commitment needed to start applications in late October or November, everyone feels ready to start this process at different points in high school. I recommend starting to visit colleges and universities by end of sophomore year.
